How Accurate Are Weather Forecasts?
Weather forecasts are estimates based on observations, satellite and radar data, and computer models of the atmosphere. They are useful planning tools, but they are not promises about exactly what will happen at every street or hour.
Why forecasts change
The atmosphere is constantly moving and changing. Small differences in wind, temperature, moisture, or the timing of a weather system can affect the outcome—especially several days ahead. Local terrain, coastlines, and city conditions can also influence weather in ways that are difficult to model precisely.
How to use a forecast well
Use the hourly forecast for plans later today and check it again before leaving. Treat a 7-day forecast as a broad outlook; details generally become more dependable closer to the date. Look for trends across several updates rather than reacting to one small change.
When safety matters
For severe storms, flooding, extreme heat, or other hazards, follow official meteorological services and local emergency authorities. A general forecast website should not be your only source for safety-critical decisions.
