How to Prepare for Monsoon Season
Monsoon periods can bring repeated heavy rain, thunderstorms, local flooding, and travel disruption. Preparation before the rainy season can reduce avoidable risks at home and on the road. Local conditions differ, so use forecasts and official warnings for your area.
Prepare your home
Clear drainage
Remove leaves and rubbish from drains where it is safe and permitted. Do not enter flooded drains or fast-moving water.
Protect important items
Keep documents, medicines, chargers, and a small emergency kit in a waterproof bag stored above likely flood levels.
Check your roof and power
Arrange repairs before storms where possible. Keep away from fallen wires and never touch electrical equipment standing in water.
Travel more safely
Plan the route
Check official road and weather updates before leaving. Allow extra time and postpone nonessential trips during severe warnings.
Never cross floodwater
Depth and current are difficult to judge, and roads may be damaged underneath. Turn around and choose a safe alternative.
Stay informed
Keep devices charged and follow local emergency management guidance. Move to higher ground when authorities instruct you to do so.
A forecast can change quickly during monsoon weather. Review updates regularly and follow evacuation instructions promptly.
