Driving Safely in Fog
Fog reduces visibility and makes it harder to judge distance and speed. Even familiar roads can become hazardous when landmarks disappear or traffic slows unexpectedly. If visibility is extremely poor, the safest choice may be to delay the journey.
Before you drive
Check conditions
Review local weather and road advisories before departing, especially early in the morning or near rivers and low-lying areas.
Clean your windows
Use working headlights and defogging controls. Follow local rules for fog lights and avoid high beams when they reflect back from fog.
Allow more time
Leave earlier if conditions are manageable, and tell someone your route when travelling through remote areas.
While on the road
Reduce speed gently
Drive at a speed that lets you stop within the visible distance. Avoid sudden braking and sharp lane changes.
Increase following distance
Leave more room between vehicles and use road markings as a guide without staring only at the vehicle ahead.
Do not stop in a live lane
If you must pull over, move completely away from traffic to a safe location and use hazard lights as local rules require.
If conditions become unsafe, pull over only at a suitable safe place or postpone the trip. Follow police and road-authority instructions.
