Flood Warning Preparation Checklist
Flooding can develop from prolonged rain, intense thunderstorms, overflowing rivers, or blocked drainage. Water may rise quickly and hide damaged roads or strong currents. Prepare before a warning whenever possible.
Make a household plan
Know safer places
Identify higher ground and more than one route away from flood-prone areas. Learn local evacuation routes before an emergency.
Pack essentials
Keep water, shelf-stable food, medicines, a flashlight, batteries, basic first aid, chargers, and copies of important documents ready.
Protect utilities safely
Learn how to shut off utilities only if authorities or qualified professionals advise it and you can do so without entering water.
When flooding is possible
Act on warnings
Move valuables and people to safer areas early. Follow evacuation orders immediately; do not wait to see how high water gets.
Avoid floodwater
Never walk, swim, or drive through it. Even shallow moving water can knock a person down, and vehicles can be swept away.
Return carefully
Wait for official clearance. Avoid damaged buildings, contaminated water, and electrical equipment that has been wet.
Local emergency agencies provide the most relevant instructions for your area. Keep alerts enabled and contact emergency services if in immediate danger.
